Why Natural Light and Ventilation Should Be Deal-Breakers When Choosing a Flat

When house-hunting, it’s easy to focus on finishes, brand names and amenities. But two things you can’t fix easily later are natural light and ventilation.

A well-lit home feels bigger, cleaner and more uplifting. You use fewer lights in the day, and the overall energy of the space feels more positive. Dark, enclosed rooms, on the other hand, tend to feel heavy and dull no matter how nicely they’re decorated.

Ventilation affects comfort and health. Good cross-breeze reduces humidity, smells, and reliance on constant AC. Spaces that never get fresh air can develop mould, musty cupboards and more insects.

When visiting a flat, pay attention to how many windows there are, which directions they face, and whether neighbouring buildings block them completely. Visit at different times of day if possible.

You can always change paint, tiles and furniture over time. But you can’t move the sun or break the neighbour’s building to get a window view. That’s why light and air are worth treating as deal-breakers.
