Designing a Work-From-Home Corner That Fits Inside an Existing Room

Not everyone has a separate study, but most of us still need a focused work corner. Even in a shared room, a small, well-defined workspace can make a big difference.

Choose a spot with at least some natural light if possible. A corner near a window works well, but avoid full glare on your screen. A simple curtain can help control light.

Use a compact desk or even a wall-mounted, foldable table if space is tight. The goal is to have a stable surface just for work, not to live permanently on the dining table.

A comfortable chair is worth investing in, especially if you sit for long stretches. It doesn’t need to be a bulky “office” chair, but it should support your back properly.

Keep basic supplies—charger, notepad, pens, headphones—in a small organiser or drawer near the desk so you’re not constantly getting up.

To visually separate the work zone, you can use a rug, a different wall colour, or even just a pinboard above the desk. That little corner then becomes your “focus space,” even though it’s inside a larger room.
