Monsoon season tests a building’s plumbing and drainage system. A few simple checks before the heavy rains arrive can prevent ugly surprises.
Start with balconies and terraces. Make sure floor drains are not choked with leaves, mud or old plastic. Pour a bucket of water and see if it flows quickly.
Check bathroom and kitchen floor traps too. If they’ve been dry for a long time, pour some water so they seal properly and don’t allow smells to come up.
Look at exposed pipes and joints in utility areas. Any rust, dripping, or white mineral deposits may indicate slow leaks that will worsen under constant rain and pressure.
If your building has a history of backflow or drain choking, talk to maintenance early about getting common lines cleaned or inspected before the season.
Preventive checks are far cheaper and calmer than calling a plumber at midnight when water is backing up where it shouldn’t.
