If you travel often, you might feel guilty about keeping plants. But some varieties are tough enough to handle a bit of neglect and still look good.

Snake plant (Sansevieria) is almost legendary for low maintenance. It tolerates low light, doesn’t need frequent watering, and still stands tall. ZZ plant is another slow-growing, deep green option that survives long gaps between waterings.

Money plant (pothos) is forgiving and can grow in water or soil. Even if it droops a bit after a dry spell, it usually perks back up once watered.

Succulents and some cacti do well if you have a bright spot. They store water and prefer drying out between waterings—but you must avoid overwatering when you are home.

Before longer trips, water plants well, move them slightly away from harsh direct sun, and group them together so they create a slightly more humid micro-climate.

Choosing the right kind of green means you can enjoy plants without feeling like you’re constantly failing them.
